They don’t just use coffee barrels — they char them first In this clip, Mike Winters, founder of Quintaliza Tequila, explains why charring coffee barrels is a critical step in their tequila aging process and how barrel char impacts flavor, aroma, and balance. This isn’t flavored tequila. It’s intentional barrel treatment designed to control how tequila interacts with the wood. [00:00:00] All right, this is going to be a fresh pop. And if Quinteliza says bold, let's see if this bottle proves it. What's up, everybody? This is Brad from Tasting Tequila with Brad. And today we're going to do a fresh pop review of Quintelisa high proof reposado bottled at 45% ABV. And that word bold right there isn't an accident. Quintelisa leans into it across their entire brand. Not loud for the sake of loud, but bold in flavor, bold in production, and. And bold and staying true to agave. I also want to say up front, I recently had the opportunity to interview the founder, Mike Winters, and he's amazing. His passion and his intention behind this brand absolutely shows up in the glass. All right, let's get this one in a glass. Okay. Like I said, it is a fresh pop. So here we go. [00:00:47] Nice little pop. Let's pour it in here and take a look. [00:00:55] Look at that color. Wow. Okay, in this case, Quintalisa did not water it down. It's high proof cast strength, exactly how you want to experience it. Okay, let's dive into production a little bit. 100% organic blue agave grown and harvested in the highlands, where they're a little more expressive. So maybe that's where some of that bold comes from there too. Now, when you talk about bold, this is distilled by the master distiller Iliana Partida at Hacienda del oro in Namo 1522, a family owned distillery that's been producing tequila for generations. And you're talking about a woman who is just absolutely making moves and showing people how she can make fantastic tequila. This agave is cooked in a stainless steel autoclave at very low pressure. It's extracted through their roller mill. It's natural fermentation for three days. It's double distilled there in their stainless steel stills with copper coils. And here's where they take a turn. A true reposado double barrel aged using proprietary techniques, including time in coffee barrels, creating a really bold agave first sipping flavor that has some coffee nuance to it that I've had in the regular strength. I've never had the still strength. Okay, let's dive into the nose. On the nose. Really nice cooked agave, a little bit of roasted coffee, some dark fruit, and I pick up a little bit of dark chocolate. It's a really awesome nose. All right, let's hit the taste. First sip, big time cooked agave. But that coffee and dark chocolate bitterness comes in with some ripe fruit sweetness that is really good. And at 45 ABV, this doesn't feel overpowering. I wouldn't even know it was a higher proof if I didn't see it on the bottle. All right, and here's the bummer for everybody. This is a limited release. It's almost sold out. You can find it still go to their website. It is 69.99. And that is a great price for a really bold tequila that's doing something different. All right, this tequila is not just your normal one. This one speaks really boldly. This tequila is really backed up by Quintelis idea of making something different and special. And using Ileana Partita for craftsmanship really makes this a winner. Mike Winters does a great job. If you want to learn more about him and the company and the tequila, go check out the interview that we did. If you've had this tequila, drop a comment, let me know what you thought. And if you've only had the regular reposado, let me know what you think of that one, too. Until next time, stay tuned. Sip bold and drink responsibly.
