Show Notes

Tapatio Blanco tequila is one of my all-time favorite traditional blancos — and it’s often misunderstood. Many people see the screw top and simple label and assume it’s cheap tequila. That couldn’t be more wrong. In this video, I talk about why the current Tapatio Blanco bottle and label are special, why they’re being phased out, and why you should buy this bottle if you see it. We also dive into the traditional production methods at La Alteña Distillery (NOM 1139), led by legendary master distiller Carlos Camarena. From tahona extraction and brick ovens to open-air fermentation and copper pot stills, this is tequila made the old-school way — with no additives and no shortcuts. If you care about real, agave-forward tequila, this bottle is a reference point. If you see this label on the shelf — don’t judge it. Buy it. [00:00:00] If you see this bottle, buy it. The label and the bottle are going away to me. One of the best blancos ever to be made. And if you're going to judge it by its packaging instead of the tequila, maybe you wouldn't buy it. One of my all time favorite blancos, Tapatio Tequila Blanco. I want to start with the bottle, this label, the shape, the screw top. I think it's beautiful, honest, traditional and no hype. And if you see it on the shelf, buy it because this design is completely being phased out and and I'm going to miss it. In the US people see a screw top and assume cheap tequila, that's wrong. Tapatio has always been great. They spent money on production, not packaging. Made at La Atena Distillery, NOM 1139 in Arandas, Mexico by master distiller Carlos Camarana. This Production is all 100% Blue Weber Agave, all grown in the highlands. They're using brick ovens to hona and roller mill extraction. All open air wood fermentation. Everything is copper, pot stills, no additives. This one is 40% ABV. This is traditional tequila, truly done right and done not only the way Carlos has done it for years, but also his grandfather, his great grandfather and the entire Camarena family dating back more than 200 years of making tequila. Let's dive into it. No fresh pop here. You just have to twist off the top. Although that is going to change soon. [00:01:21] This is a traditional highland agave tequila. Cooked agave, citrus zest, some black pepper, a little bit of earthiness. Let's dive into the taste. [00:01:36] Great cooked agave minerality. It's got a nice oily texture to it. You pick up some of that white pepper and the finish, it's long, it's kind of dry, it's peppery and it's just pure agave sweetness. To me, Tapatio Blanco is a reference point. It's really how I gauge how other blancos should taste. It is definitely not understated. It is true pure tequila exactly the way that it's supposed to be made. If you find the bottle with this label, grab it. The bottle changes soon. I'll put some pictures of what the new bottle is going to look like. It's beautiful, it's elegant, it's classy. It'll probably make this tequila sell in America better than it currently does. Drop in the comments if you like the new tapatio design or if you rather buy the old one. If you've had tapatio, let me know. Thanks. For watching my videos. Have a great night.
