[00:00:00] All right, guys, tonight I'm going to do something a little different because I'm going to have some bourbon on the show. What I'm going to do tonight is in honor of my friends Matt and Drew from Whiskey Tequila Fridays podcast. If you haven't had a chance to listen to that podcast, definitely go check it out. You can get on all the podcast platforms and they are a whiskey hunter and a tequila guy. Matt's the unofficial whiskey hunter and Drew is the guy that brings tequila in the show. And. And they always bring something they try to blend together and they talk about the tequila, they talk about the whiskey. And the thing that they do in the show that I think is really cool is a thing called a quick sip, and we're going to do that tonight. A quick sip is where you know the tequila, you taste the tequila and more. The finish runs out, you know the whiskey, you taste the whiskey and you see what does the whiskey bring to that tequila. And then you turn around and you do it the opposite direction. You then nose the whiskey, taste the whiskey, and before the finish runs out, you take a nose of the tequila and then taste the tequila and see which direction you like the best. And I thought it was fitting to do this today because this weekend I did get the opportunity to run up to Chicago where Matt and Drew are from, although neither of them came to where I was at. But that's okay, guys. You'll meet with me next time. But I did get to hang out with Matt from Ensuo and I got to hang out with my friend Sergio Cruz and and do a tasting in what I think is the coolest liquor store I've ever been to off premise in Chicago. It's fantastic. Adam runs a tight ship there. If you're looking for great tequilas, you're looking for great wines and some really special spirits. Make sure you run over to off premise. It's very fantastic. I'll put a link on the. On the screen here. So let's dive into these. I'm doing this one because this in Sueno Anejo Single Barrel Tequila Collective Release is a tequila that's been aged in Woodford Reserve barrels. After they came out of the Woodford Reserve barrels, they were then finished in Woodford Reserve cherry bitters barrels. So you got a couple different things going on here. You got bourbon affecting the tequila that's in there, and then you're going to put it in the cherry barrel and you're going to let that cherry bitters barrel affect the tequila as a finish. So I want to dive into these. I think it's only fitting that since it's a tequila show, that we actually start with the Ensueno. The nose on this is so good. The cooked agave still comes out really strong, but you do pick up this nice oaky caramelly. I almost want to say musty barrel smell. And there is a fruity red fruit smell in there as well. I can't say that it's cherry, but it is like a red fruit nose. So. All right, here goes.
[00:02:44] Okay. If you've never done this before, you should do this. The tequila has this great fruity, agave light, very fresh flavor to it. And then when you go into the nose of the whiskey, it's very oaky. It's very woody. And then when you go into the taste of the bourbon, it made it very bitter to me. You had these oaky, bitter notes that kind of took over. And then from there you had some of this, I'm going to say, like a fruit that. I don't even know how to put my finger on the fruit that it was. It was like a. Not like a red fruit, but more like maybe fig.
[00:03:20] It was. It was heavy, so it wasn't fresh. It really kind of pulled everything down in flavor a little bit. And I didn't even really pick up that normal Woodford taste that I would have if I was sipping a Woodford. It just kind of clashed into each other. So I hope it's better the other direction. I don't know if I mentioned it. These are called the quick sips on the show. It's after they've talked about everything for a little while. So I kind of diving right into it to get the comparison of the two. So let's nose the whiskey, which has a nice whiskey bourbon smell, that musty barrel smell, some caramel. But it is way fruitier than what it was in what I tasted and nosed after the tequila. I pick up almost like a pear note, A nice caramel. A nice caramel note. Okay, here goes. First whiskey on the show. So let's do it the opposite direction here.
[00:04:12] Wow. Okay. So this way, it really brought out a cherry note that I didn't, you know, be able to put my finger on that it was cherry. I said there was red fruit. Now I get the cherry, I get the vanilla. The bitterness isn't there, but it has a much warmer finish into the tequila. It made the tequila less bright, and it made the finish a little warmer. And then so many more fruit flavor with this really nice run of caramel inside of there. So definitely like bourbon into tequila versus tequila into the bourbon. And I think these were a good ones to do it with with this being the same barrel. Not the same barrel but the same brand. But you know, this was a really good experiment if, if you have some bourbon at home that you really like and you want to pair it with a tequila that you really like, this is a fun thing to try. Just pour them, sip through them and see how they affect each other. And if you haven't watched the show or listened to the show, Whiskey Tequila Fridays definitely do it. We will have them on this show again soon and hope to be on their show soon as well. We've been trying to arrange that for a little while. So cheers to Drew and Matt and thanks for watching, everybody. I hope you enjoyed this one. Have a great night. Cheers.
