If you’re a whiskey drinker, this tequila might finally make sense. Today I’m reviewing the House of Rare RAREcask Genesis PX Extra Añejo—aged in bourbon barrels and finished in PX sherry casks. If you’re a whiskey drinker, this tequila might finally make sense. Today I’m diving into the RAREcask Genesis PX Extra Añejo from House of Rare, a limited release tequila aged for 3 years in bourbon barrels and finished for 6 months in Pedro Ximénez (PX) sherry casks. This is not your typical Extra Añejo. With only 1,000 bottles released and bottled at 46% ABV, this tequila leans heavily into barrel influence—bringing out rich notes of dried fruit, molasses, spice, and oak that will feel very familiar to whiskey lovers. I also recently sat down with Miguel Ortiz, the founder of House of Rare, to talk about their unique aging philosophy and the RAREcask program—where they’ve been using exotic barrels to age tequila for years before launching their own label. Is this a tequila for purists… or a gateway for whiskey drinkers? Watch and decide. #Tequila #Whiskey #ExtraAnejo #TequilaReview #agave © Tasting Tequila with Brad

[00:00:00] If you're a whiskey drinker, this tequila might finally make some sense to you. This is the rare cast Genesis PX Extra Anejo from House of Rare. And this isn't your typical Extra Anejo. This is their first true age release under their own label. They went all in, only a thousand bottles. Crystal decanters. I mean, man, this thing can work your arms out. This is a process that leans heavy into barrel influence. But here's the key. The bottle isn't about being rare. It's about how it's made and who it's made for. The traditional foundation, brick ovens, open air fermentation, copper pot stills, all the things that we like to see. But the aging's where it ships. They got three years in bourbon barrels and then it's finished for another six months. And Pedro Jimenez Sherry cast this PX finish. This is something you see more in scotch than tequila. And that's really the DNA of this brand. Before launching their own label, Al Sharar built a reputation through rare cash programs, sourcing exotic barrels, managing aging with other producers. So this bottle finally puts the full version hit in one Release. Bottled at 46 ABV. So we're getting more body, more agave flavor and hopefully more of that barrel coming through as well. Let's get in the glass. And one thing that's really cool about this one, you have to have something to pull this cork out. [00:01:17] I wanted to use a little bit more of a wine style glass. Something that would maybe carry a few more aromas to the top. And hey, I put on a fancy shirt for this one. Thanks for my wife for getting a nice golf shirt with agave plants on it. Let's go. Here's the nose. On the nose you get really nice roasted agave. And the thing that stands out for me is something I always get in sherry, rested tequilas. It's like a dark fruit. Raisins, figs, dates. It's definitely for me, I call this a dessert profile. This is something I go to at the end of the night. There's a little bit of a nuttiness in there as well. And a little bit of that, like leather, I'm going to say leather, chocolate, tobacco. That as a bourbon drinker I would be used to. Let's taste this puppy. Look at the color and the, and the legs on that thing. I mean, holy cow. [00:02:03] Great mouthfeel. Right away, cooked agave. And I get like a molasses and a dark caramel and then all of those dried fruit notes. It also has some Spiciness to it. Maybe a little bit of something herbal. I almost want to say like clove or a grass note. And there's a little bit of a cinnamon note as well. And all those fruits that were in the nose are in there with this as well. But I do think when it was raisin and fig in the nose, like really darker fruity flavors, I do get more of like an apricot or maybe even a little bit of peach in the, in the flavor. The finish, it's warm, it's spicy and it hangs on all of those like barrel driven spices or like all spice is there and it's nice how it just kind of stays there and keeps you warm. O okay, so let's talk about who this is for. This is for tequila purists. It's for people who love agave and citrus and minerality. But you also are trying to dive into a little bit more of the barrel influence. I'm a blanco drinker and I love their founders cut. But when it comes to drinking something like this, this is a special occasion drink for me or this is a dessert finishing off the night for me. But if you're a whiskey drinker and you're stepping into tequila and and you want something that has a little bit more of a whiskey profile that brings that tequila flavor forward, this is definitely one for you. You'll get those familiar whiskey, bourbon, scotch type notes with a tequila base right underneath. I just recently wrapped up an interview with Miguel Ortiz, the owner behind House of Rare. And hearing about how intentional they are with their barrel selections and their finishing makes this make a whole lot more sense after you taste it. So if you get a chance to watch that video, it's on my YouTube channel. This is coming in around $230 I think. It launched on April 29th. There's only a thousand of them coming out. So if this is one that you haven't got the chance to experience, I definitely say dive in. Miguel, I want to say thanks for this one.
