YEYO Capri Reposado: The “8-Second Ride” Tequila?

What makes a tequila taste like an “8-second ride”?

Today we're tasting YEYO Capri Reposado, an extremely limited release from YEYO Tequila with fewer than 900 bottles produced.

Capri spent more than six months in white port barrels, creating a very different flavor profile from a traditional tequila. Before the final release was decided, I had the opportunity to taste around six to eight different barrels and experience the blending process firsthand with John, Sergio, and the team.

One particular barrel became known as the “8-Second Ride” because about eight seconds into the taste, the flavors suddenly exploded across the palate.

So how does the finished YEYO Capri compare?

YEYO Capri is made at NOM 1414 under master distiller Sergio Cruz using estate-grown Highland blue agave.

The white port barrel is what really separates Capri from the regular YEYO tequila. The barrel influence brings additional fruit, spice, sweetness, and complexity while the underlying YEYO agave character remains present.

I also had the opportunity to taste multiple barrels before the final blend was created, which makes tasting the finished Capri especially interesting.

Some bottles were also specially hand-painted and signed by Sergio with “1414,” making them particularly collectible.

Only a limited number of bottles were released, with around 16 cases going to Indiana and availability in only a small number of locations.

If you're a tequila fan, collector, or someone who enjoys limited-edition tequila releases, this is definitely a bottle worth knowing about.

Have you tried YEYO Capri?

[00:00:00] Fewer than 900 bottles of this tequila right here in the world. And some of them have been special hand painted bottles. And I actually got to chase through the barrels while they were figuring out what Capri was going to become. This is the Yayo Reposado Capri. This is a very limited release from Yayo. Now you're going to see Capri advertised. It's spending about five months in a white port barrel from Portugal. But what I know from being there and tasting these barrels is it actually spent a little more than six months in the barrel before everything was finished and bottled. And that little extra taste matters, especially when you're talking about something as expressive as a white pork. [00:00:32] Before this release was finalized, I had the chance to taste somewhere around six to eight different barrels while they were working through what the final blend would become. That was probably my favorite part of the whole release because these barrels did not all taste the same. So you really could see how much variation there can be from one barrel to another. There was one particular barrel we nicknamed the eight second ride. It was really cool. The flavor profile really stood out. But all of a sudden, about eight seconds into the taste, it hit you. Bam. All of these flavors, your mouth just lit up. So we were really hoping that the 8 second ride would just turn out to be what Capri was. I can't tell you for sure if it is the same because it did rest for a little longer and then it did rest in stainless steel before it was bottled. So it may have taken away a little bit of that. So tasting this finished Capri today is almost like going back and sitting through that entire blending process with John and Sergio and the team. It was a blast. I'm so glad they let me hang out with him to do that. Okay, enough about that day. Let's talk about Capri. It's followed a 43% ABV or 86 proof. Underneath all of that white poor influence, you still have the great Yayo Foundation. This is made at nom 1414 under Master Distiller Sergio Cruz using a state grown highland blue agave brick oven, cooked open air fermentation, using that famous classical music during the fermentation and then twice distilled in copper. But white port barrels are what completely separate Capri from the regular Yayo lighter. So let's get this into the glass. As you can see, it's been sipped on a bunch already. [00:01:54] It has a great color to has a great nose. You can actually smell it as soon as you pour it into the glass. Let's let's actually dive into this one and see what we got. Okay. So you get, you know, your tequila smell, that roasted pineapple, sweet potato, cocoa gave smell. You get this nice underlying cinnamon with some baking spices. I get a little like a blood orange note, maybe even a touch of cherry, a little bit of vanilla there too. Now, I can't tell you what white port wine tastes like, so I'm not a wine drinker, so I really don't know what that's imparting into the Tequila other than that cherry and blood orange are a little different for me than in a regular Tequila. And there is like a fruity spice. Dive into the taste. [00:02:33] Mm. Wow. The finish does, like heat up really nice. I get a nice mouth feel with this. There's a little bit of honey, some tropical fruit, maybe some stone fruit. There's almost a little like nuttiness to this. My cooked agave is there. There's a sweetness there. The finish starts to dry out and brings you some more of that stone fruit sweetness. And wasn't quite the 8 second ride that we talked about at the distillery, but it does come to a point where it's nice and soft in your mouth and then the heat kind of comes in the back of your mouth. So really balanced, really nice. Having drank this straight from barrels and going through these tastings, this one is interesting to me. Now that it's a finished product, you get some of the things that I remember from those other barrels kind of blended right into this. And honestly, this is a little easier to drink today than what it was out of each barrel. But that resting time kind of changes it up after. It's got a little oxygen to it. And again, this bottle's been popped and been sipped on quite a bit. If you haven't had Capri, this is one you need to look for. Now you'll see beside me there is this really cool bottle here. They did do some painting of bottles. You may find one of these in a store. They are autographed by sergio with a 1414 on there. I don't know how many of them they made. I don't believe it was a lot. But if you see one that's going to be really special, definitely grab it. And I got to say, this is only available in a couple places in the country. One, you can get this from Sip tequila dot com. They have the bulk of the bottles and some exclusive stores in Indiana will have these bottles as well. There are around 16 cases that came to the state of Indiana, if you like learning about great tequila.
