We Ran a Race Through a UNESCO-Protected Agave Landscape ‍♂️ | Carrera del Agave This might be the only race in the world run through a UNESCO-protected agave landscape — and we ran it. ‍♂️ Tonie and I take you to Amatitán, Jalisco for the incredible Carrera del Agave. This might be the only race in the world run through a UNESCO-protected agave landscape — and we ran it. Tonie and I traveled to Amatitán, Jalisco to take part in the Carrera del Agave, a truly unique 10K race set in the heart of Mexico’s historic agave fields — a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. Organized by master distiller Iliana Partida, this race celebrates the land, culture, and people behind tequila. We were honored to run alongside Todd Homell, owner of Elevación 1250 Tequila, and experience firsthand how deeply connected tequila is to agriculture and heritage. This isn’t a city race. This isn’t a typical destination run. This is culture, community, and agave — step by step. If you love tequila, travel, running, or meaningful experiences, this race belongs on your radar. Subscribe for tequila stories, culture, and experiences you won’t find anywhere else. © Tasting Tequila with Brad ================================================= More Related Tags: tequila lovers podcast, tasting tequila, tequila reviews, best tequila, tequila tasting, tequila brands, additive-free tequila, tequila lovers, top tequila brands, premium tequila, sipping tequila, tequila cocktails, tequila expert, tequila recommendations, best sipping tequila, agave spirits, Mexican tequila, tequila education, tequila history, podcast #carreradelagave #agavelandscape #unescoheritage #agavespirits #tequilaculture #tequilalover #tequilajourney #crafttequila #mexicandrinks #tequilatasting #agaverun #adventuretravel #podcast

[00:00:00] Speaker A: We didn't just run a 10k. We ran it through Amatitan, the heart of Agave World. Tony and I were in Amatitan, Jalisco. Right in the heart of the agave landscape earned by the UNESCO World Culture Heritage Status. And it was pretty incredible, wasn't it? [00:00:15] Speaker B: Yeah, it was. It was. It was a fun race. Yeah. [00:00:19] Speaker A: So she just said that about running 10 kilometers or 6. What is it, 6.2 miles? [00:00:25] Speaker B: Yeah, I think so. [00:00:26] Speaker A: And you said it was fun. [00:00:27] Speaker B: Yeah, it was. It was all downhill. A lot of people can't do downhill because of their knees, but it didn't hurt mine. It was a fast race for sure. [00:00:35] Speaker A: Yeah, we did. In under an hour. [00:00:37] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:00:37] Speaker A: Which I was shocked. [00:00:39] Speaker B: I was hoping. Cause I didn't train at all. Unlike you. I was hoping an hour, 15 minutes. [00:00:45] Speaker A: I didn't train for this race. [00:00:46] Speaker B: The week before he ran the marathon, so he was ready. [00:00:50] Speaker A: The Disney Marathon. The Disney Marathon, which was pretty fun, pretty cool. And I beat my time. [00:00:55] Speaker B: Yes. [00:00:55] Speaker A: 5.5 hours and 25 minutes. So. But here's the difference of running the Disney marathon and running this 10k. At the end of this 10k, we got a bottle of tequila. Right? [00:01:07] Speaker B: So have I never done that before? [00:01:09] Speaker A: Yeah, I just got like a Goofy award. That actually was really cool. That was a really cool medal. But we got these really cool medals. [00:01:16] Speaker B: Says the agave race. [00:01:18] Speaker A: And that's what. What does it say on the bottle here? Because you say these words better than I do. [00:01:21] Speaker B: Oh, Torera della agave, which is agave race. [00:01:26] Speaker A: So the agave race, very cool. This race is pretty cool. It's actually put on by Ileana Partita. So the tequila that we won when we finished is tequila that's made right there in Amatitan. El Altamo Agave made it, not 1522, which is fantastic. And we were invited to run this by Todd Hummel, who is the owner of Elevation 1250. Elevation 12. [00:01:49] Speaker C: This is one of the most incredible 10Ks to do anywhere in the world. But it's right here in Amatitan. It's an incredible experience, and you get tequila at the end of this run. Thank you, Iliana, for hosting us again. This is my third year. We'll be back next year. [00:02:10] Speaker A: Elevation 1250, which I was pointed out by Todd that I say the name wrong all the time. So now I am working hard on making sure I say elevation 1250. A great tequila. I poured Tony the Repo, because you like both the Rosa and the repo, but I believe you liked the Repo the best. And then I didn't want to open our little race bottles because they're cool. No. So I went ahead and just opened El Ultimo Agave, you know, from. [00:02:37] Speaker B: I don't think you just opened it. [00:02:39] Speaker A: No, I. I didn't. I. I just won. Yes. So I want to say cheers. Thanks for going to run this race with me. [00:02:46] Speaker B: Pretty fun. Salud, Todd. Thank you for inviting us, Ileana. Thank you for putting the race on. [00:02:52] Speaker A: Yeah. And. And greeting us at the end. [00:02:54] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:02:55] Speaker A: And hanging out at the beginning of the race with us, which was a lot of fun. And I know she had a lot of work to do to put it together, gathering all of the volunteers to do the work and the water stations and the shirts and the. The medals and the people and the charities that are involved. But to me, the most important thing she did drove us back up the hill. [00:03:15] Speaker B: Oh, my goodness. Yes. Six miles back up the hill. Walking would not have been good. I would not have been happy. That wouldn't have been a fun race. [00:03:22] Speaker A: It would have changed the whole idea. Yeah. So we started just outside of the railroad tracks in Amatitan, so just. Just across the highway that takes you on to Tequila. And for people who don't know, Amaton really is the birthplace of tequila. And if you go back and look at where Tequila really came from and where the first train station went to, you know, the Ordine station stopped in Amaton. Tequila actually came second. So we ran through. The area is a UNESCO heritage site. It's one of the. One of the places that is preserved to always be representative of agave and tequila. So the highway that we ran down, we left by the railroad tracks in the Matatan. We ran down all the way down to a little town called Chome C H O M E ch. It was pretty neat, wasn't it? [00:04:09] Speaker B: Yeah. And it's the only road that goes down there. So there was no other way back. [00:04:14] Speaker A: Right. We had to wait till everybody was done. [00:04:16] Speaker B: Yeah. Thousand runners. [00:04:17] Speaker A: Yeah. Thousand runners. And. And what did you finish? [00:04:21] Speaker B: 370. First three. [00:04:23] Speaker A: You were 370. I was 371. You beat me. [00:04:27] Speaker B: Yeah. I thought it was 371 and 2. [00:04:29] Speaker A: Oh, maybe it was then. 3 71. 3 72. Some running there. So. But we didn't think we were doing good, did we? [00:04:37] Speaker B: No. So everybody was spread out, I guess. Yeah. [00:04:41] Speaker A: Yeah. And there. So I had a fear coming into this race after running the Disney Marathon. The Disney Marathon, there's a time limit on the race. So at the end of the race end of the time limit. There are the. What's called the balloon ladies. And if the balloon ladies catch you, then. Yeah, like you. You're going. So the balloon ladies catch you if that happens. I thought they handed you a whole bunch of helium balloons and you floated away like the movie up. But you didn't. They put you in a bus and then you didn't get to finish. So I heard this music coming behind us, and I could tell it was getting closer and I. I picked up the pace a little bit, didn't I? [00:05:22] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:05:22] Speaker A: And then the music caught us and then it passed us and then it kept going and we realized we were okay. [00:05:29] Speaker B: We were good. Yeah, they were just going to the bottom. Their way to the bottom. [00:05:33] Speaker A: But when that happened, we did speed up and then the hill got bigger and so tell everybody about the views of what you've seen while we were running. [00:05:40] Speaker B: So beautiful. All the agave plants. That was pretty. But the mountains, the. I don't know. Did we see the volcano or was it just. [00:05:48] Speaker A: No volcano is behind us. So this was the. [00:05:50] Speaker B: So it's just the mountain. [00:05:52] Speaker A: The mountains that we. When we go to Jimmy's house and we go to San Martin, those are the same mountains that we look at going into the deepest canyon. [00:06:01] Speaker B: Yeah, it was a very deep canyon. [00:06:04] Speaker A: One of the things that you said when we started was that you didn't feel like we were up that high. [00:06:08] Speaker B: Yeah. So we drive into the town to park, and we didn't drive like up a hill to park, we just drove. And so I'm like. You couldn't see anywhere down, but all of a sudden just start going down. It was. It was like. [00:06:27] Speaker A: It's because you're in this flat land, but we're high up when you're in Amatitan. I don't. I don't know what the exact elevation is. I do. I know what the elevation is. It's 1,250 meters. So that is the elevation of Ileana's distillery. So when you do the math on that, I think tequila sits at like 1600 meters, and Guadalajara is like 1500 meters. And I. I think Denver, Colorado is 1600 meters. So we're. We're at the Mile High City. Which is also why I. When I talk about tequilas from that area, I don't call it the lowlands anymore. I call it the Valles, because the Valles is the region that we're in. It is a valley within that high land. So it makes sense that, like, when you're in Denver. And you. You can go really down, but it's really flat in Denver until you go up into the. The Crazy Mountains. So the views were amazing. I put some of those on the screen when you rounded the corner, and we could look down into the canyon. And to see where we were running was pretty amazing. So it was another thing to tell Americans that you don't have to sit at home in fear about traveling to Mexico. Stupid people win stupid prizes for doing stupid shit when they go places. There's a lot scarier places in Indianapolis to me than any of my travel to Mexico. And the people are always sweet, welcoming, friendly. And I. Outside of Todd, I think the three of us were the only gringos in this race. [00:07:56] Speaker B: I think so, yeah. [00:07:58] Speaker A: I don't remember seeing anybody else that was American, but they. They cheered for us just like everybody else. They didn't say our names. [00:08:05] Speaker B: No. [00:08:05] Speaker A: They probably didn't know how to pronounce. [00:08:06] Speaker B: Them, or they might have. [00:08:07] Speaker A: They might have, too. We weren't paying a lot of attention. We were excited to be finishing under an hour. [00:08:11] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:08:12] Speaker A: Todd finished just a little bit behind us. Todd's a runner as well. He's ran many marathons and half marathons, and one of the things that he. This race was. It was the most scenic run that he had ever done. So even if you're not a runner, if you're a walker, if you want to help out a local charity and come see an amazing landscape, just an amazing place, do this run, right? [00:08:34] Speaker B: Well, yeah. Or just come watch the run. You can drive to the bottom and see the view and cheer on the people. [00:08:43] Speaker A: You can. Yeah. We ran past a couple of other distilleries, which was kind of cool. [00:08:48] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:08:48] Speaker A: We ran past Grupo, which is where they make lalia, I think. And then we ran past ttap, which they make some tequilas there at tap as well. So that was pretty cool. Lots of locals cheering us on. At the finish, you went into this little plaza, and everybody kind of hung out there, which is pretty cool. They gave us some bananas and tequila, which I. I didn't get a banana. I didn't get a palate. I did get a palette. I was more excited about the tequila and the metal and the cool shirt. We all ran in these shirts. [00:09:24] Speaker B: I didn't. [00:09:24] Speaker A: I didn't find this was too big. Okay. So in the back of this shirt, it's really cool. It actually has the same picture that's on the bottom with the. The indigenous people that have smoke. There's smoke rising from the agave. The back shows where the lightning bolt hit the agave. And it goes back to this story of the lightning hitting the agave and it cooking the agave and then people drinking. What came from kind of goes back to this whole thing of the history of how tequila started. So it was kind of neat to run in a historical place like that and get all this cool stuff. So. [00:09:55] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:09:55] Speaker A: We doing it next year? [00:09:56] Speaker B: We're going to do it next year. Anybody want to join us, let us know. [00:09:59] Speaker A: Yeah, come with us. [00:10:00] Speaker B: It's always fun. It's always in January. I'm assuming it is, yeah. [00:10:03] Speaker A: Way better weather in amount of time in January than what we have here. It was like 60 something in the morning and it's like 78 during the day. [00:10:14] Speaker B: Yeah. It felt a lot hotter than that, though. [00:10:16] Speaker A: It did. Because we just ran 10k. All right. Thanks for doing this. You haven't been on in a long time. Everybody's like, excited somebody's pretty on the show instead of my ugly mug. Well, cheers. What do you think of that tequila? Very good. You like it? [00:10:32] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:10:33] Speaker A: Does Todd need to get his tequila in Indiana? [00:10:38] Speaker B: Yep. [00:10:40] Speaker A: What about Eliana? She needs to get it here too. We need more choices. And this is a fantastic tequila. I. I think it's 25 bucks. So an amazing agave forward flavored tequila at a great budget price. So. Yeah. All right. Cheers. Come run with us. Balloon. It's pretty sad.
