[00:00:00] Hey, guys, tonight we're going to dive into the tequila brand that started it all for me, and, man, I wish the brand was still the same. We're going to talk about Cabo Wabo, and I'm a big Sammy Hagar fan. Go to his birthday party every year. And the first tequila that I fell in love with was way back in 2003 when I first drank the real first lighthouse, Cabo Wabo. Now, it wasn't in this bottle. It was actually in a ceramic bottle. So this bottle was the second bottle that came out. And this was a fantastic Tequila. And I believe this one was made at nom 1426. And the brand stayed at 1426 for a long time. And I really enjoyed the tequila. After Sammy sold it, there were a lot of changes, and thanks to my friends at the Tequila Report, they have asked me to do a review on this monster right here. This is the new Cabo Wabo reposado. They didn't even keep the same blue label for years. This came in a blue bottle. And if you've ever been to the Cabo Wabo and had their famous margarita called a waborito, the reason they added the blue carousel to it was to make it blue like the bottles.
[00:01:09] The blanco came in a crystal clear bottle, the repo came in this blue bottle, and the anejo came in a brown bottle. So now once it's taken over by the current owners, Kapari, they maybe made it a little cheaper. All right, let me move this one out of the screen. Okay, here's the deal. I am one of the reviewers on the Tequila Report. The Tequila Report is a email magazine that comes to you twice a month. You get to get some reviews. There is some fantastic reviewers on the panel. I have to be number 12 out of the 12. They're just great people that I really respect and have a lot of tequila knowledge, and they're really fun to learn from. So make sure you go check out the Tequila report. So they asked me to do a review on Cabo Wabo, the current one. So here it is, and here we go. Let's get it in the glass.
[00:01:56] I have not had Cabo Wabo tequila for at least a couple of years. This tequila is now made at nom 1440. Agave matchmaker says this one is autoclave. Low pressure for cooking, for extraction. It says that it is roller mill crushed for fermentation. Says it is in stainless steel tanks. It doesn't say anything about what kind of yeast or if it is open or closed. Fermentation and for still type, it offers up two. It says column still and stainless steel pot with copper coils. And it's still 40 ABV or 80 proof. They don't give an age statement for the time that this was in the barrels and they also don't offer up what kind of barrel it was aged in. So let's, let's dive into the nose first.
[00:02:41] The nose is very light. I get it. A little bit of an oaky smell. I get a little bit of cooked agave. There may be a slight vegetable note in there as well. So not a great nose. Now I will say, as for the legs on it, man, they're really good. But again, it could have something in it to help that. So here goes. Let's do the taste.
[00:03:04] Very light mouthfeel. There's some cooked agave there. There's. There's a little bit of a vegetal note and then there's this massive amount of bitterness that comes across. I really expected more of a fake sweetener in this than what I'm getting. So that is a little bit refreshing that it's just not a giant sweet sugar bar. A little bit of a fruitiness and a little bit of Coco Gabi, but it's really not a lot there. When I said I was surprised, there's not a big time sweet. Correct, there's not. But the sweetness that is there, we really lays across this weird bitterness. And I do get like a little bit of an aftertaste that I don't like. Okay, I, I will say it. This is one that it's not horrible. Like this one isn't one that I would drink water if nothing else was available. I really wish the old blue bottle Cobble Waba was still around because it is fantastic and I do tell a lot of my friends, you know, if you're looking for that old school cobble Wabo flavor, I do believe Nueve Uno Reposado is one of the closer tequilas for me to taste. Like that old blue bottle Cabo Wabo, it is made at the same place with the same agaves. I doubt the barrels are the same since it's been a while, but the same approach. So in conclusion here, Cabo Wabo Reposado, current day Cabo, not going to be one that I'm going to pick up at the store. It's not one that really meets my profile. I am going to say though, if you're trying to make the move over from one of those really heavy, you know, sweet caramel cake batter tequilas and you want to get into a little bit more of what tequila can taste like, this might be one to give it a try. It is definitely leading more towards tequila that I could drink on a regular basis than what some of those others are. So Cabo Wabo Semi Hagar brought a great tequila to market. I absolutely loved it and I thank that first Cobble Wabo for teaching me good tequila to drink. On this one I'd probably pass unless I was at a restaurant and it was the only one on the wall. So Kabba Wabu Tequila. I wish you still made it like you used to. It was so much better back in the day. If you like videos about tequila and learning about tequila brands, hit that like button.
