[00:00:00] Imagine walking into a Walmart in Mexico, heading over to the tequila selection to pick out a bottle that says reposado agave 1950 and thinking you've purchased a nice bottle of Mexican tequila. Well, it's exactly what happened with this bottle, except there's a pretty big problem. This isn't tequila. Not even close. And wait till I show you what's actually inside of this thing, because I think you're going to be surprised. Now, this is a pretty interesting story behind how I ended up with this bottle of Cielo Azteca 1950 REPASA. We were just in Cabo San Lucas. My son, he made friends with the neighbors in our all inclusive hotel and were chatting. They were getting ready to check out. And one of the things, it's a common thing done when you're staying at some of these all inclusive resorts is when you're getting ready to leave. You take all of the things that you built up in your room that you're not going to use and you don't want to just throw away. And you ask your neighbors, hey, do you guys want this? And the guy said, hey, Blake. My son's name's Blake. We were there at Marina Fiesta in Cabo San Lucas. And they said, hey, Blake, we've got some tequila and some amazing margarita mix and a few other beers and things left over. We don't want to throw them away. Do you want them? And he's like, sure. So they gave him this. And as soon as he did, he come walking down to my room going, look, my neighbors bought this at Walmart. And they're like, hey, this is a great tequila. So we started to dig into it and find out what it was. They thought they were buying actual tequila, but looking at the bottle, you'll figure out right here on the label, it just says liqueur de agave, but that's small compared to the word reposado. So the reposado really made them think they were buying a traditional tequila. That golden color that's related to or associated to aged tequila. Well, it's not. We did some research to find out what this is, and it's not tequila at all. It's a little bit of agave with a neutral cane spirit. And the color actually comes from some caramel coloring that they add to the spirit. They actually have it right on their website if you dive in and go check it out. Of course, there's no NOM number listed because, well, again, it's not tequila. This was about $8 at the Walmart in American Money, so very cheap. So you know tequila, there's a couple different types. One you got 100% blue Weber Agave. That's tequila. Like this one right here, where it's 100% blue Weber Agave. That's going to go in to making everything that's in this tequila. And then you have what's called a mixto. And a mix dough is going to be at least 51% blue blue agave sugars that are in the musto, and 49% sugars that are from another product like sugar cane. This one is 30% piloncill, which is a sugar cane, and 70% blue agave. And it still can say tequila because it's over 51% Blue Weber Agave in the fermentation process. But when you look at this mess, it doesn't even say tequila on the bottle anywhere. Just reposado really big. So you think it's tequila. And they got liquor, the agave. So think of this. This one is not even an agave spirit because they're using a little bit of agave in the process, but sugar cane, not mixed in fermentation, but they're using a neutral grain spirit. So that means they're blending one spirit made with a little bit of agave and another spirit made with some type of neutral grain. So not even a sugar cane spirit. And here's another kicker. It's only 28% ABV. I'm not going to taste this on the channel because I tasted it in Cabo and spit it out is absolutely horrible. But the reason I'm doing this video is know what you're drinking. A lot of times people head off to Mexico, they go to these resort areas, and they. They tell me when they got home, oh, my gosh, the tequila is so strong. And they probably were drinking something like this that's only 28% ABV. And I guess what I want you to know is read your label, read, look for certain things, right? This one, I'm not saying they're doing anything illegal, because they're not. They didn't put tequila on the label. They just really highlighted that word reposado to make you think you're buying a tequila. But if you know a little bit about it, you can look for the crt, you can look for the NOM number, you can look for the things that tell you that it's 100% blue Weber D agave, or look for something that at least says tequila or mixo. This stuff right here, I know it's only eight bucks. I bet these people had a hell of a headache. And I'm sure glad that they gave it to my son so we could try it out and make this little video. So let me know if you've ever gone to Mexico and ended up with a really bad experience drinking what may have been liquor de agave or an agave spirit. I want to hear from you. What's your worst experience you've ever had when you've gone to Mexico and drank what you thought was tequila? Cheers.
