Show Notes

I’ve been enjoying Socorro Tequila Blanco every time I fly American Airlines, but today I’m tasting the Socorro Tequila Reposado (NOM 1610) — a tequila made como debe ser in Los Altos, Jalisco. Handcrafted with 100% Blue Weber agave, brick-oven cooking, and Champagne yeast fermentation, this Reposado proves that great tequila doesn’t need additives — just passion, tradition, and purpose.

Socorro Tequila isn’t just about flavor; it’s about community. Every bottle helps fund clean-water projects in Jalisco, living up to the brand’s name — Socorro, meaning “to help.” In this full review, I’ll break down the nose, taste, and finish, plus share why it’s one of the best value tequilas under $40.

Watch until the end for details on my upcoming interview with co-founder Pablo Antinori!

Tasting Notes: Nose: Cooked agave, black pepper, oak, caramel, and vanilla. Taste: Roasted agave, pepper spice, caramel, and citrus zest. Finish: Medium-length with light oak, vanilla, and lingering pepper.

Awards: Double Gold (Blanco), Gold (Reposado), Silver (Añejo) – San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2025

[00:00:00] Well, if you've flown American Airlines lately, you've probably seen Socorro Tequila Blanco on the drink cart. I've been sipping it in midair for several months now, and today we're going to try out its older sibling. It's Reposado. And big news. I'll be interviewing one of the founders soon, so hit subscribe. You don't want to miss that conversation. Sakara was founded in 2020 by Josh Irving and Pablo Antinori, two industry pros who left the corporate world to create tequila como de bestir, the way it should be. They grow estate blue ever agaves slow, cook them in brick ovens, extract them with a roller mill, ferment with champagne yeast in stainless steel tanks, and distill twice in stainless steel pots with copper coils. Everything's additive free, sustainable, made with deep well water. They even aerate before bottling to round off the finish. They're racking up medals as well. 2025 San Francisco World Spirit Awards. The Securo Blanco took double gold. The Reposado won gold, and the Anejo won s. They also did really great in the Agavas awards. Socorro means to help. A portion of the proceeds fund clean water projects for communities in Jalisco. Agave for tradition, water for life, and helping hands for giving back. All right, let's taste this reposado. And this is a fresh pop. [00:01:17] Nice pop. [00:01:22] All right. The color, as you can see, it's like a really golden straw. Clear, bright. It's got some nice legs on the glass that kind of lasts pretty long. [00:01:31] Let's go. Let's dive in. All right. All right. I get a peppery agave punch. It's kind of the same that shows up in the blanco, but it is. It's kind of wrapped up with a little bit of oak and some caramel and some hints of vanilla bean. There's also a faint earthiness underneath. And there's a little bit of a funky cooked agave depth to it, too. That's similar to the Blanco. [00:01:52] I pick up just a hint of chocolate as well. Let's dive in. I get roasted agave. I get like a. [00:01:58] Like a cracked black pepper, a light oaky flavor, some sweet caramel tones, some citrus peel. There's even a little bit of dried fruit that just kind of really shows up there. Nothing over oaked. It's very clean. It's very balanced. It's got a medium body feel with a gentle oiliness. Oiliness, that's hard to say, isn't it? The finish is pretty Pretty nice. It's got a lingering black, black pepper kind of gets you in the back of the tongue. The sweetness kind of fades, the vanilla kind of disappears and I get a little more of an oaky flavor and then kind of a balanced bitterness as well. Overall, this is a very approachable and honest tequila. It's not something that's incredibly over complex, but it's got a really nice balance to it. This would be good for sipping neat or elevating a cocktail. I know this is priced very competitive at the upper 35 to $40. That's kind of hard to beat for a nice additive free reposado with a solid flavor. I gotta tell you, Sakura's earned a place in the skies, in the air with American Airlines. And they've earned a place on my shelf too. I love that I can grab that blanco on a flight and then come home and reach for a repo for a little bit richer experience. Traditional process, transparent mission, and a tequila that gives back. If you're looking for something smooth, peppery, forward, this is a reposado with enough oak and character to round it out. But. And it's one worth adding to your lineup. I'll dive deeper with one of the founders. Soon. Pablo and I will be doing an interview, so make sure you subscribe so you don't miss that interview. Salud. And as always, sip with responsibility and support the brands that do it right. Cheers and.
