When I first heard about Blue Star Reposado Honey Tequila, I wasn’t sure what to expect. As someone who usually prefers traditional additive-free tequilas, flavored and infused tequilas aren’t normally my first choice. But after seeing Blue Star recognized at the Agavos Awards and receiving a bottle to review, I decided to give it a fair shot.

Produced at NOM 1589 in Jalisco, Mexico, Blue Star Reposado Honey combines reposado tequila aged 3-4 months with 100% natural honey sourced from artisan beekeepers in Jalisco. The result is a sweet but surprisingly balanced tequila that still allows some agave character to shine through.

In this review I’ll cover:
Aroma and tasting notes
Production methods
Honey infusion process
Who this tequila is for
Whether it’s worth the $44.99 price tag

Have you tried a honey tequila before? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

[00:00:00] You know, I usually avoid flavored tequila, but this one might surprise me. Today we're going to talk about something a little different. This is the Blue Star honey Tequila reposado. Now, if you've watched my channel any length of time, you know I'm always pretty skeptical when it comes to flavored tequilas. A lot of them end up being overly sweet, artificial, and completely bury the agave flavor. But when I saw this bottle's recognition on the agaves awards, winning a double gold, and I think scoring around a 90 blue star honey reposado was something I thought I should try. And they were kind enough to send me all of the Blue Star tequilas to sample. So let's give this one a try. I figured it's worth giving it a fair shot after seeing it. This tequila is produced at NAM 1589, which is near Guadalajara, so more central than Highlands or Valley. I did read that in their production method, one of the things they do is they believe in harvesting their agaves at night. They feel the cooler temperatures prevent the plant's natural sugars and characteristics. And they also emphasize that they leave this tequila completely unfiltered, which help retain texture and flavor. It does say that they are using a autoclave. It doesn't say high pressure or low pressure. So I'm not totally for sure there. Also says they are using stainless steel fermentation, stainless steel for their distillation. And then it is aged for six months in American oak barrels before they add the honey that is sourced from artisan beekeepers in Jalisco's highlands. So it's a little different approach to a flavored spirit. Instead of relying heavily on artificial flavors, they're adding something natural. Let's get this one in the glass. It is a fresh pop. [00:01:31] Nice. All right, here we go. [00:01:35] All right. Let's dive into the nose of this thing. Okay. I do get that right off the bat. I get that honey. But I also pick up some nice coked agave. There's a little bit of a floral note in there, a little vanilla, so some of that barrel influence. It smells like to me a reposado that has a little bit of honey added to it, which I guess it should. Let's. Let's jump into the flavor. First thing, the sweetness of the honey, it's there, but it's balanced with cooked agave underneath. So I get the sweetness of the honey and sweetness of agave. There's a nice caramel note. There's a floral like honey note. Maybe a little bit of orange mid Palate. There's a little bit more agave than what I expected. And it seems to develop. It gets a little more oak and a little pepper spice. And that sweetness kind of dials back a little bit in the finish. There's a complex bitterness, sweetness and spicy all together. So it does have a nice flavor to it. It seems like it's all natural. Like I'm not picking up like a fake sweetness or some weird, you know, saccharine type. Not. And that sweetness and that spice just kind of lingers for a little bit and it's pretty nice, I have to say. Is this going to replace your sipping reposado? No. Who's this tequila for? If you're an entry level person and you're trying to come over and you're looking for someone that really enjoys honey whiskeys or sweeter sipping spirits, then this would be a great introduction. Nice peppery in us is there. It's not overwhelming with its alcohol. And it does have a nice, like, tequila background. I can see why in the Agavos Awards, especially not knowing what it was, why it did rate as high as it did in those blind tests. So my final thoughts. I'm not a guy who's gonna go look for flavored tequila. If I only had this around, I would sip on it. But I do believe you probably could make some really cool cocktails and lean into that honey side of this tequila. All in all, pretty good tequila. Thanks for sending this to me, Blue Star. We're gonna probably talk about some of your other tequilas as well. Let me know in the comments if you've had this. Let me know what your thoughts are on tequilas that are flavored and if you think honey and tequila go together. Chee, thanks for watching. Have a fantastic night.
