Best Tequila Brands for Every Back Bar? | Must-Have Tequila Picks

If you're opening a tequila bar or building an agave-focused restaurant, what tequila brands should be on your back bar?

In this video, I share the tequila brands I believe every serious back bar should consider. We discuss additive-free favorites including Fortaleza, G4, Ocho, Cascahuín, Don Fulano, Siempre, Lost Lore, Zumbador, Chamucos, Atanasio, Yéyo, Rimari, Manuscrito, ArteNOM, Cazcanes, Valor, Arette, and Tierra de Ensueño.

I also explain why brands like Patrón, Don Julio, Clase Azul, and Casamigos still deserve a place on many back bars for customers who are just beginning their tequila journey. Along the way, I share one of the biggest lessons I learned during my ITA Level 3 certification—there really is no "bad tequila," just tequila that may not fit your personal palate.

[00:00:00] One question I've been getting a lot lately from bars and restaurant owners is if I'm going to build a real tequila or agave bar, what brands do I absolutely have to have on my back bar? And that's a really interesting question because the answer depends on who you're trying to serve. If you're building a bar for just agave nerds like me, the list is pretty easy. I want brands like Fortaleza, G4, Ocho, Costcoin, Don Falano, Siempre, Los Lors, Humidor, Chumokos, Athanasio, Yayo, Ramari, Manuscrito, Artenom, Cascado, Arete, Terra, d', An, Sueno, and don't forget one of my favorites, Velour. And those are brands that are consistently producing incredible tequila. They're transparent about how it's made, and their bottles are ones that I'm excited to order from anywhere. [00:00:46] I want to pour some of this on Jejo. Can't wait for the next anejo to come out. But here's something that I Learned during my ITA Level 3 certification to be a sommelier. And it changed really the way that I think about tequila. Really. Truthfully, there isn't a bad tequila. There's just tequilas that don't fit my profile. That doesn't mean somebody else won't absolutely love them. That's why if I owned a tequila bar, I gotta say, I'd carry brands like Futurone, Don Julio, Glacier, Azul, and Casamigos. Now, before buddy freaks out and starts typing mean comments, hear me out for a second. The average consumer walking into a restaurant probably knows one of those brands. They're comfortable ordering them, and if they trust your bar, maybe next time they'll try an ocho or a G4 or Don Falano or Lost Lore. Those familiar brands become a bridge that introduces people to traditionally made tequila. To me, a great tequila bar isn't about proving you're the biggest tequila geek in town. It's about creating a lineup that welcomes everyone, whether it's the first margarita or their hundredth bottle of traditional tequila. I also say I want to make sure there's some high proof tequilas available, some of the great reposados and anejos, handful of limited releases, and of course, some excellent Mezcal Soto Racia. And if you can get your hands on it in Indiana, Simbacanora, an agave bar should celebrate the entire category, not just tequila. Now, I want to hear from you if you were going to open your ultimate tequila bar in your town. Think about the brands that are available in your area because you only can get them from local distributors. What brands would you absolutely have to have on your shelves? Drop in the comments. I'm really curious what everybody has to say and I'll let you know as some of these new restaurants and bars are starting to add incredible tequila to their selection in Indianapolis. I'll let you know where some of those bars are. So again, I'd love to hear your comments. Thank you so much for watching my content and watching these crazy videos that I do. This is a lot of fun. Cheers. Have a great night. I hope you're enjoying some fantastic Valor Anejo tonight.
